A solo exhibition

The Milk Factory Pop-Up Gallery

Water in the landscape comes in many forms determined by how it moves and places itself in its surroundings. Through its range of movement, from the vast ocean’s crashing waves to a still or rippling puddle, water uses the sun’s light at various times of the day and conditions to give us a kaleidoscope of colours through its ability to reflect and refract.

This solo exhibition, The Shape of Water in Pastel, explores the nature of water and how it embraces the sun’s light in all its shapes and forms using the vibrant, velvety, and versatile medium of soft pastels.

Artist's Statement

The artist, Joanne Power Cotton, is a textile and garment designer who discovered soft pastels 5 years ago and has never looked back. “Soft pastels are the purest form of pigment offered in all the mediums for painting fine art and their  vibrancy and layering capacity have inspired me to search my most creative heart and soul when interpreting the beautiful world around us.”

“I have chosen to paint a series of my interpretations of ‘the shape of water’ in the landscape to celebrate the importance of water in our world – in our environment - and to reflect upon all its beauty, purity, and strength – in a time when we are all to painfully aware of how humanity can destroy what is pure, unique, and beautiful... please enjoy and celebrate with me…”
